Just before Christmas we decided to join the Bunch group for a meal out to celebrate the festive season. Instead of the tradition roast, we opted for an Italian at Rimini in Selly Oak. It was a great night and lots of fun was had by all.

Christmas Meal 2011

Chem Ball 2012

Friday saw the annual Chem Ball run by the departments ChemSoc. This year it was held at Birmingham Botanical Gardens and it was a big hit. There was a three course meal followed by a live band and a DJ playing on into the early hours. It was a fantastic night and I am sure we will all be talking about it for the rest of the week now that we have recovered from the fuzzy heads!

New Post Doc

The Peacock group would like to warmly welcome their new postdoc to the group. Aimee Gamble has joined us after completing her PhD at York University. She will be working on the preparation and use of ferrocene-coupled peptides based on GCN4 as electrochemical sequence specific DNA sensors. We hope she enjoys her time with us.

Go Ape!

In order to welcome Aimee to the group and bid a fond farewell to our masters students, Richard, Amy and Helen (who unfortunately could not make the day), we paid a visit to Go Ape! After getting strapped into our harnesses we headed up to the tree tops via a very wobbly rope ladder. Here we were meet with a series of obstacles to pass in order to get to the fun part, the zip wire! Some of us were extremely good at the course (Richard and Manu) galloping ahead of the group and even went further completing parts walking backwards. Others took a more subdued approach with elegant displays of the splits whilst trying to reach the next step. Although it took us a while to work out how to land the zip wire forward facing we did finally manage it and put a stop to the trousers full of bark by the end of the course. In the final stage we reached the ultimate challenge, the Tarzan swing. Many found it was the best part of the day, even going back for another go. Others had to be more persuaded with constant reassurance that it was FUN!

After brushing ourselves down we decided we had well and truly earned a big pub lunch and headed to the local for a cooked dinner and cold drink. We then headed back full and tired to sit on the M6 for two hours. Thankfully the rain held off and I know we all had a fantastic time despite the bruises and aching the next day brought.

Post Graduate Symposium

The 25th and 26th of June saw the annual postgraduate symposium within the department. The event gives PhD students the chance to showcase their work within the department. Final year PhD students present to the school and second year students display posters. After an excellent talk, Manu was awarded with second prize for his presentation, chosen out of 29 fellow presenters.

The Peacock group would like to congratulate Manu on this achievement. We hope he buys an excellent chemistry book with his prize!

New Members!

The Peacock group would like to welcome their new students. Lina, Louise and Siobhan are joining the group as masters students to complete their final year research projects. We hope they enjoy their time with us and get lots of amazing results!

Dr Gamble!

The Peacock group would like to congratulate Aimee on successfully passing her PhD and officially becoming Dr Gamble. In order to celebrate her achievement and welcome the new masters students, the group went for their favourite past time, curry and booze. Unfortunately, in the mist of all the fun we forgot to take any pictures. Once again congratulations Aimee!

Christmas 2012

As is now tradition, the Peacock group joined the Bunch group for a Christmas celebration. This year we opted for a Mexican meal at Bodega followed by a festive walk around the Christmas market, including a ride on the merry-go-round for those with a childish side. The evening finished in the Post Office Vaults bar for those that still needed more alcohol. Thanks to all who came and made it a great night.

Post Graduate Symposium

The 2013 RSC Bio-Organic Group Postgraduate Research Symposium was held on Thursday 11th April at the University of Manchester. Gemma attended the conference and presented her work on “Anthracene Biomolecules for Sensing.” There was a lot of interest in the work and she was awarded with 1st prize for the poster contribution.

The Peacock group would like to congratulate Gemma on this achievement.
