Manu’s first paper

The great week is continuing in the Peacock group with Manu having his first paper accepted to Zeitschrift für Anorganische und Allgemeine Chemie for his work on “Conformational study of an artificial metal-dependent regulation site for use in designer proteins.” Congratulations go to him.

Farewell Dr Gamble

After what feels like the quickest year, the time has come for Aimee to move on from the Peacock group. To bid her a fond farewell we all went for a drink and a curry at the Taj Mahal. Although we will all miss her we want to wish her well in her new pursuit of becoming a teacher, a role we all known she will be amazing at. Good luck Aimee!

Congratulations to our Masters project students on their Graduation!

The Peacock group would like to extend a huge congratulations to Louise, Siobhan and Lina, our masters project students, on their graduation day. You have all been a great addition to the group and you will be missed. Good luck for the future and we look forward to welcoming at least one of you back to the group in September.

Congratulations!

Your Fellow Peacock’s!

Welcome to our new students!

In order to welcome our new students, Sarah, Louise, Adam, Caitlin and Emily, we decided to have a night out at a local comedy club, the Glee Club. Trying to avoid drawing too much attention to ourselves, we sat quietly at the back. Obviously a group of scientists couldn’t make it through the whole show without being noticed though, especially when one chokes on their ice cream! Unfortunately the comedian, being a former English teacher, had a lack of knowledge of science. The only chemistry he could remember was “covalent and iconic bonds!” I am sure all would agree that it was a fantastic night as can be seen by our smiley faces and glowing eyes...it was Halloween!

Congratulations Xun!

The Peacock group would like to congratulate Xun on passing his viva and becoming the first PhD student to graduate from the Peacock group! After defending his thesis for nearly 4 hours Xun emerged from his viva a happy man. His is now looking forward to going travel and relaxing for the next six months. Well done Xun!!!

Christmas 2013

As the festive season is upon us once again the Peacock group thought it would only be right to celebrate in the traditional manner, a meal and some drinks with the Bunch group. After exchanging Secret Santa presents with a strict £5.20 budget, we all donned our Christmas jumpers and headed for a Christmassy mulled wine at the German market. We then had a great meal at Red Peppers followed by a few more beverages. Thanks to all that came to help celebrate. Merry Christmas all!

Well done Louise!

Congratulations to Louise and the rest of the University of Birmingham Polo team for winning the Uni Challenge Polo Tournament.

Congratulations Matt and Gemma!

The first ever BioNanoSupra Unit Year 2 Symposium for the University of Birmingham was held on 16th April. All year 2 PhD students presented their work in a short 10 minute presentation. A prize was awarded to the best presenter which was voted to be Matt. Well done to him for a fantastic and confident presentation and for fielding questions expertly.

In the same session prizes were also given to those who had published impacting papers in the previous year. Gemma was awarded a prize for her paper on Gold-Phosphine Binding to De Novo Designed Coiled Coil Peptides. The peacock group would like to congratulate them both on their achievements.

Congratulations Matt!

Congratulations Matt (Again)!

Matt has continued 2014 in the same fashion as it began. Several members of the Peacock group attended the RSC Chemistry Biology Interface Awards Symposium at Leicester yesterday and presented their work. Matt was very successful and was awarded with first prize for his poster. Well done to him!
